Dakota McConnell

Director

Dakota McConnell is a percussionist and educator from Casa Grande, Arizona. Dakota is an alumni of The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps where he marched from 2014-2017, leading the section in ’15 and ‘17. Dakota also marched with Pulse Percussion in the 2017 and in 2018 led the group to a 4th place finish. Dakota has a Bachelor of Arts from ASU in interdisciplinary studies with concentrations in business and economics. Dakota has taught Casa Grande Percussion Ensemble since fall 2016 and will spend the summer teaching The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps. Dakota has learned from, but not limited to, Glen Crosby, Ike Jackson, John Mapes, Cisco Hance, Rick Barclay, Ryan Anderson, Ezekiel Lanser, Connor Yasuda, Drew Guy, Will Edmonds, Stevie Hagel, and John Sutton. This is his 2nd year with Flux.

Alex Barreras

Assistant Director

Alex Barreras’ performance experience includes Breakthrough Indoor Percussion, POW Percussion, The Academy, Blue Stars, and Pulse Percussion. Alex has also performed with the Sun Devil Marching Band and PHX Percussion (Phoenix Suns Drumline). Alex currently teaches at Casa Grande Union High School and was a former battery instructor at Mesa High School. Since the summer of 2017, Alex has flown out yearly to Quetzaltenago, Guatemala to work with Life Music Corps where he serves a position of "Percussion Caption Head" and offers advise to various other disciplines. Alex also taught at Pacific Crest where he served as a tenor technician during the 2017 season. This past WGI season, Alex was also a quad technician at Breakthrough Indoor Percussion. Alex is a graduate from Arizona State University and currently holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Criminal Justice. Outside of drumming, Alex works in behavioral health as a High Needs Case Manager where he helps "at-risk" children get back on there feet. Alex resides in Phoenix, Arizona with his girlfriend, Thanda, and lovely dog, Coco. This is his 2nd year with Flux.

Martin Hebda

Secretary

Martin Hebda grew up in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  This is where his passion for music really blossomed.  He was very active in the school and in community music program.  He marched with the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps in 1992 and 1993.  Martin studied music education at the University of Arizona and participated in small brass ensembles, vocal ensembles, jazz ensembles, wind ensemble, marching band, and pep band. Martin has been teaching music for twenty years.  He is currently in his seventeenth year as band director at Casa Grande Union High School.  Martin stays involved with the professional organizations in Arizona.  He served eight years on the WGAZ board serving as the AIA liaison, show host coordinator, and vice president.  He also served as the AMEA Southeast Regional Governor for four years.  Martin is currently the AMEA member at large and the vice president of AzMBA.  Martin enjoys working with students of all ages and directing the various ensembles.  It has been an honor to conduct the Southern Arizona Honor Band. This is his 2nd year with Flux.

Matthew Geres

Treasurer

Matt Geres has been involved with the indoor percussion activity since 2005. He was a scholastic performer with Casa Grande Union High School from 2008-2011 and joined the education staff soon after in 2012. Matt is currently the program coordinator for the Casa Grande Indoor Percussion Ensemble, where he also serves as the battery arranger and co-show designer.

 

Outside of the marching percussion activity, Matt earned a B.S. of Engineering from Arizona State University and works as an electrical engineer in Phoenix, AZ. This is his 2nd year with Flux.

Sherry Rogers

Operations Manager

Sherry Rogers got involved with the marching arts when her kids got involved with band in elementary school. She has been the merchandise manager for The Academy Drum & Bugle Corps since 2014. She has worked for WYR Clothing based out of Tempe, AZ since 2017 as their financial officer and lead embroiderer. She will take on a more active role of Operations  Manager for Flux Indoor Percussion so the staff can focus on the design process and instructional side of the group. She is excited to be a part of Flux as they grow Arizona’s percussion programs. This is her 2nd year with Flux.

Thanda Lwin

Social Media Manager

Thanda's passion for music began with learning to play the violin in the fourth grade. In high school, Thanda participated in choir and one year of drumline playing quads. Thanda was also a very dedicated artist and has sold various paintings in the past. From then on, she stayed involved in the marching arts by supporting her boyfriend, Alex, as he continued through his age out at Pulse Percussion. Thanda has an interest in photography/videography and has captured touching moments throughout the first season of Flux. Thanda will be taking photos/videos and posting them on social media platforms for Flux Indoor Percussion. This is her 2nd year with Flux.

Ricky Barrera

Snare Instructor

Ricky Barrera is an Arizona percussion educator with 7 years of experience in marching percussion. He has marched snare with groups such as; Mesa high, Breakthrough indoor 2013-16, Arizona state marching band 2015-16 and POW Percussion 2017. 

 

He has taught various ensembles around the state. Some of the groups and schools include: Westwood HS, Saguaro HS, Phenom sound sport, Hamilton HS and Mesa HS . Ricky also teaches lessons and gives clinics across the valley. This is his 2nd year with Flux.

Alex Barreras

Cole Governo

Tenor Instructor

Cole was born and raised in Gilbert, Arizona. He is currently teaching at Corona Del Sol High School and is pursuing a degree in Clinical Psychology.

Cole's marching experience includes ASU Sun Devil Marching Band, Breakthrough Indoor Percussion, POW Percussion, The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, Pacific Crest, and RCC Indoor Percussion. He has also performed with the Cardinals Drumline and BOOM! Percussion. This is his 2nd year with Flux.

Kyle Kemp

Bass Instructor

Kyle is an educator who has been active in the Arizona percussion for years. He played Bass Drum for the Corona Del Sol Marching Band (2013-2014), Pacific Crest Drum & Bugle Corps(2014-2016), and Breakthrough Indoor Percussion (2017). After he graduated in 2014 he was the Pit Coordinator for West Valley High School in California. In 2017 he became Caption Head for the Queen Creek High School fall & winter programs.

Thomas Meier

Front Ensemble Instructor

Thomas has taught at several schools throughout Arizona. Most notable is the four-time state champion, Casa Grande Indoor Percussion Ensemble where he also composes and arranges for.

Thomas has performed with The Academy Drum & Bugle Corps and the ASU World Percussion Ensemble. This is his 2nd year with Flux.

Whitney Hansen

Front Ensemble Instructor

Whitney has been teaching percussion for the past 10 years across the state. Most recently she has worked with Page High School Indoor Percussion, Breakthrough Percussion, and is currently the director/creator of the Walden Grove Indoor Percussion Ensemble.

She as performed with the Lumberjack Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, and Percussion Ensemble. This is her 2nd year with Flux.

Juan Oliveros

Front Ensemble Instructor

Juan has a BFA in painting from Arizona State University. His marching experiences includes Breakthrough Indoor Percussion 2013-2017 and SDMB 2013-2016. He currently teaches at Basha High School and Mesa High School! This is his 2nd year with Flux.

Claire Thorpe 

Front Ensemble Instructor

Claire Thorpe is going into her senior year as a music education major at the University of Arizona, where she will be finishing her fourth year on snare drum with the Pride of Arizona as the center snare and drum captain. She has marched three years of drum corps on vibraphone, with the Academy in 2017 and the Santa Clara Vanguard in 2018 and 2019. This past winter season, she performed with Breakthrough Indoor Percussion on tenor drums. Claire is looking forward to her first season teaching with Flux Percussion, and hopes to continue to further the education of Arizona’s youth in both classical and marching percussion. She has a cat named Midna, and loves to cook. This is her 1st year with Flux!

Payton Hiscok

Cymbals Instructor

Payton's marching experience includes Breakthrough Indoor Percussion, ASU Sun Devil Marching Band, The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps and most recently, RCC Indoor Percussion. She has also been the cymbal instructor at Perry High School and Higley High School.

She is currently studying Elementary Education at Arizona State University and will graduate next year. This is her 2nd year with Flux.

Van-Ahn Tran

Cymbals Instructor/Physical Trainer 

Van-Anh has taught at several schools throughout Arizona. Most notable is the four-time state champion, Casa Grande Indoor Percussion Ensemble. 
Her marching experience includes Mosaic Indoor Percussion, Dark Sky Percussion, ASU World Percussion Ensemble, and The Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps. This is her 2nd year with Flux.

Sierra Rogers

Visual Caption Head

Sierra Rogers is a music educator residing in the greater Phoenix area. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music in 2018 at Arizona State University. As an active performer and instructor in Arizona’s marching arts, Sierra has served various music and visual roles at Dobson High School (Mesa, AZ), Desert Edge High School (Goodyear, AZ), Desert Mountain High School (Scottsdale, AZ), and Casa Grande Union High School (Casa Grande, AZ). She was involved with the ASU Sun Devil Marching Band as well as with The Arizona Academy Drum & Bugle Corps. Her experience as a drum corps member includes six years with The Academy, from 2012-2017, and she plans to age out from drum corps in 2019. Sierra is also an alumna of Breakthrough Indoor Percussion, where she marched the 2016 season. This is her 2nd year with Flux.

Dean Dickens

Visual Instructor

Born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, Dean moved to Tempe in late 2017. He is currently the visual caption head at both Shadow Mountain High School and Coronado High School. Before moving to Arizona, he taught at a number of groups in the Las Vegas Valley, notably 10 time MBOS champions Foothill High School. Before aging out with the 2017 Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, Dean had the privilege of performing with the Vegas Vanguard Percussion Theater, UNLV Star of Nevada Marching Band, and and Sacramento Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps. Dean joins the visual staff as a movement tech, and will be working with the marching musicians in Flux’s 2019 production.
